Background
Thor 2: The Dark World is the sequel to Thor (released in 2011). It’s based on a comic book created in 1962. This sequel shows Thor, The god of thunder, having to team up with his evil adopted brother, Loki, to save the universe from the Dark Elves. This sequel is also a follow on from the Avengers Assemble film (released in 2012) and shows previews for the new Avengers film (due to be released in 2015).

Chris Hemsworth first acted in Guinevere Jones as King Arthur in 2002. But had his first film debut in Star Trek in 2009 as George Kirk. He is most famously known for his part as Thor.
  Natalie Portman first acted in Developing as Nina in 1994. She is most famous for playing Padmé/Queen Amidala in Star Wars. She’s also starred in V For Vendetta and Black Swan.

Tom Hiddleston first acted in The Life And Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby in 2001 But made his first film Debut as Oakley in Unrelated (2007). He’s most famous for his part of Loki I Thor but has also starred in Family Guy and has met the Cookie Monster.
Christopher Eccleston first acted as Dick in Blood Rights (a TV Movie) 1990. His first proper movie was Let Him Have It in 1991. He’s most famous for playing the 9th doctor and G I Joe. He’s most famous for playing bad guys in the Sci-Fi Genre. 
Kat Dennings first acted in Sex in The City in 2000. Her first film debut was Raise Your Voice in 2004. She’s most famous for her role in 2 Broke Girls as Max. She plays Darcy in Thor. 

Marketing
The announcement was made in March 2013. Articles were released in popular magazines and the first trailer was released in April. Loki was reintroduced to the world in the San-Fransico Comic-con. The second trailer was released during Youtube's Geek Week. The film also contained preview footage for the new Avengers movie.

Plot
The film is about an Auctioneer who becomes involved with the theft of a painting from his own auction house. However, he is attacked and suffers a blow to the head giving him amnesia. He then has to go through trance states to try and remember where he hid the painting.

James McAvoy made his first film debut in The Near Room (1995). He’s well-known for his parts in Narnia, Wanted and X-men: First Class. Has recently starred in a few crude comedies with unlined seriousness; such as: Filth.
Vincent Cassel first acted in the TV show La Belle Anglaise (1988) but made his first film debut in Les Cigognes n’en font qu’a leur tete. Famous for his part in Black Swan.

Advertised through posters on public transport and occasional trailers. James McAvoy is also a very popular actor so this may have also encouraged people to go to watch the film. But the main reason Trance got it's popularity was because of it's viral release.
